13. Junior European Championship 1979

Athens, Greece, August, 41 entries from 15 countries.

Generally with very strong wind conditions, however sometimes rather shifty, Frank Butzmann in the former boat of Jochen Schumann turned out to be superior, taking five times line honours.

14. Junior European Championship 1980

Vilassa de Mar, Barcelona, Spain, August 5-14, 24 entries from 9 countries.

All races enjoyed fine wind between force 2 and 5. In a report it can be read, that the same problems as five years later plagued the competitors. Cars were forced open in broad daylight with money and passports stolen by the dozen, the launching facilities were scandalous but the people in the club so cordial and the racing on the water fabulous.

15. Junior European Championship 1981

Hoorn Ijsselmeer, Holland, July 17-22, 37 entries from 13 countries.

Fine weather conditions but difficult waves characterised the regatta. After Jacek Sobkowiak was leading overall and Paolo Semeraro had some good score in the middle phases, Tinu Tootsy took line honours and the final win.

16. Junior European Championship 1982

Malmo, Sweden, July 5-11, 33 entries from 14 countries.

As usual in Malmo the current was more of a problem than the wind. On the first three days with medium winds Andrej Nikandrov collected twice line honour and three times runner-up. Two more races with wind between force 5-8 saw Nikandrov in 11th and 6th, which was easily enough for the title.

17. Junior European Championship 1983

Porto San Giorgio, Italy, July 14-20, 37 entries from 15 countries.

Wind were light to absent and therefore only 4 races were finally scored. At the first mark Heiko Birke (DDR) was frequently leading, however during the race the clever Dane Peter Vilby, a newcomer from the Laser, passed him and finally scored 1/4/1/1.

18. Junior European Championship 1984

Helsinki, Finland, August 22-26, 34 entries from 14 countries.

The first race with a force 5 caused quite a number of capsizes. The second day with light winds saw the Jury busy to record infringements of rule 60 - means of propulsion - on tape recorder. 11 boats were disqualified and the sailing techniques of these and ten more changed considerably. The rest of the regatta enjoyed constant winds of force 3-5.

19. Junior European Championship 1985

Vilassa de Mar, Spain, August 5-11, 30 entries from 11 countries.

The launching facilities were as bad or as spectacular - depending whether you were a participant or an onlooker - as five years before. In the first race the windward mark and the gybe mark drifted and so the race had to be abandoned despite wonderful sailing conditions. For the rest of the week the wind was medium, racing great and the mood high.

20. Junior European Championship 1986

Balatonfured, Hungary, July 19-21, 43 entries from 16 countries.

The event was characterised by shifting winds and thunderstorms, typical of Lake Balaton. Armando Ortolano won the first two races. W-B Lixenfeld won the third and Hans Spitzauer the fourth. After Peter Aldag won the fifth, any of six boats could have won overall going into the last race. It looked lost for Spitzauer after two successive sixths in previous years, as he rounded the last leeward mark in 20th, but a huge cloud changed things. With nothing to lose, he split from the fleet and caught a tremendous shift in his favour and finished on a screaming reach in first place, to take the title in his last year as a junior.

Cesme, Turkey, September 5-12, 17 entries.
